Puma Reading Club
Parker Puma Reading Club
All Parker Elementary students are invited to become members of the Puma Reading Club!
Why do we have this program?
It's simple- the more we read, the better we become at reading. One of the best ways to do this is to cultivate reading as a habit. The Puma Reading Club is a way to encourage your student to make reading a regular, daily activity outside of school hours. Ideally, students in grades K-5 should read for at least 20 minutes per day outside of school. Our program eases them into a daily reading habit, starting with jst 10 minutes per day and gradually growing to that goal of 20 minutes for grades K-2 and 30 minutes for grades 3-5.
How does the program work?
📚 The goal is for each student to read 100 nights or more during the 2024-2025 school year.
📚 Reading is to be recorded on the 25-night reading form they receive from the Media Center.
📚 Reading Form Information:
* Record the minutes read outside of school hours on ONE LINE of the form. Students can read longer but only one line should be filled out per night.
* Students may backdate their first form to October 1, 2024, if they know they have read on those days.
* Fill in the student's first and last name, homeroom teacher and grade.
* A parent/guardian signature is required when the form is completed.
* Return the form to the Media Center where reading efforts will be recorded.
* Pick up a new form for the NEXT LEVEL.
📚 If your student completes the 75 night form and you anticipate they will try to complete 100 nights, please circle the desired T-shirt size.
📚 Reading certificates and prizes will be distributed by the Digital Day 2 following the day the form was turned in.
Reading Effort Recognition Levels
Your student will receive the following certificates and prizes:
25 night of reading (10 minutes per session) - "Black Pearl" level certificate and reading sticker
50 nights of reading (15 minutes per session) - "Emerald" level certificate and scented pencil
75 nights of reading (20 minutes per session) - "Topaz" level certificate and a bookmark
100 nights of reading (K-2: 20 minutes per session; grades 3-5: 25 minutes per session) - "Diamond" level certificate and a T-shirt
125+ nights of reading (K-2: 20 minutes per session; grades 3-5: 30 minutes per session) - "Ruby" level certificate and an invitation to the Super Reader Event at the end of the school year
How can you help your student?
It is important to encourage your student and monitor their reading. For the Puma Reading Club, students should read at their independent reading level, meaning the level at which the student can easily read a text on his/her own. When your student is reading at his/her independent reading level, the student will hardly make any errors and have excellent comprehension of the story. They are reading alone with confidence. Students in kindergarten and first grade who are not yet reading can have someone read to them, whether it’s you, an older sibling, grandparents, or other caregivers.
